Dr Gareth Brookes is a graphic novelist, academic and Lecturer in Illustration Animation at Kingston University. He has published four graphic novels including The Dancing Plague (SelfMadeHero) and The Black Project (Myriad Editions). His monograph Reading Comics Through the Body is published by Palgrave.

In this digital self-portrait, Laura's stylised head is illustrated with black ink against a flat baby-pink background. A girl tilts her head playfully but is shy, sticking out a tiny tongue and featuring big manga eyes with sparkles. Three lines on her cheek represent a slight blush. Big squared glasses frame her eyes, filling half of her face. She has a tiny pointy line as a nose and big ears adorned with an earring. A headscarf adorned with hair clips is pinned behind her shiny black inked hair, which includes a side fringe curled at the end.

In the self-portrait illustration of the artist İpek, a girl with long, orange hair captures our picture using a blue camera. With one hand, she presses the shutter button, while the other adjusts the lens. Her hands are a light, pale orange, and she wears a blue-green sweater. In the background, there is a softly textured sky in a light pinkish hue. The wind tousles her hair in both directions and atop her head, an orange snail gazes to the right. Five blue birds ascend on the right side in the snail's line of gaze. Just below them, a single dandelion flower tilts to the right in the air. The stem of the dandelion is blue, with a spherical flower, and pale pink seeds extend from thin blue stems at its center. A brown rabbit sits with its back turned, on the girl's hair flowing to the left. To the right of the rabbit, two blue, soft-textured clouds hover in the light pink sky.

A black and white self-portrait of the artist Akile Nazlı, drawn with pencil. Nazlı is in the centre of the illustration. She has big dark colored curly hair, in big circular shapes around her head. Her eyes are looking at the right side of the picture, making her look as if she is thinking about something. Her face is neutral and a little bit sad. She wears a sweater with a crew neck.
