About the Accessible Lines
Accessible Lines is an online platform that allows illustrators to showcase their work with audio descriptions in their voices. It aims to make illustrations accessible to blind and low-vision audiences. Accessible Lines project wants to support illustrators and encourage them to make their illustrations accessible. The platform is a showcase for everyone to discover new illustrators and illustrations.
In the project's first edition, the works of ten illustrators from Turkey and ten from the UK are showcased online, along with audio descriptions, transcripts, and translations. Following the first edition, the project aims to grow internationally and build an accessible future for illustrations by inviting illustrators worldwide.
The project was founded by the British Council Creative Producers Programme Alumni disabled illustrator Hatiye Garip and funded by the British Council.
Illustrators
Half of the illustrators participating in the Accessible Lines project are disabled, and their disabilities include physical disability, blindness and low vision, deafness and hard of hearing, and neurodiversity.
Illustrations
All illustrations are horizontal in a 4:3 ratio. The illustrations were created using various techniques such as digital, watercolour, felt pen, pyrography, foam clay, and collage.
Audio Descriptions
The audio descriptions were written and recorded following a short visual description training session with Anne Hornsby from Mind's Eye. The audio descriptions were produced by Paddy Johnston, with a specific sound design for each illustration. The sound design advice was provided by blind sound designer Peter Bosher. Each audio description is approximately 2–4 minutes long.
